Birding the right way

Birds are wild lives, not content. A few principles we hold to — and ask you to as well.

🪺 Don't disturb nests
Under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981, intentionally disturbing a nesting Schedule 1 species is a criminal offence. We auto-fuzz those locations to a 5km grid — please don't try to work around it.
📏 Keep your distance
Use binoculars and a long lens — not your feet. If a bird is alarming, freezing, or repeatedly leaving its perch because of you, you're too close.
🎵 No call playback in breeding season
Playing recorded songs to draw birds out is stressful at any time and risks abandonment of nests in spring and summer. Just wait quietly.
🥾 Stay on the paths
Follow the Countryside Code. Stick to public rights of way, leave gates as you find them, take litter home, keep dogs under control near ground-nesting birds.
🔇 Be cautious with rare-bird locations
A rare sighting can attract crowds that trample habitat and harass the bird. Use the "hide my exact location" toggle, on by default. For genuinely rare or sensitive species, consider reporting privately to your county recorder or the RSPB instead.
🤝 Share kindly, ID generously
Beginners deserve a warm welcome. If someone mis-IDs a sighting, vote "not accurate" politely — the goal is keeping the data clean, not winning points.
