Birding in December: What to See and Where to Go in the UK

Short days, big numbers. Wildfowl are at peak, dusk roosts are spectacular, and garden feeders are busier than at any other time.

Updated 21 October 2026

December birding is about spectacle and timing. Get to a wetland for the middle of the day, then stay for the roost at dusk. A single afternoon can give you geese, swans, harriers, owls and a murmuration.

December tips

December birding: common questions

What birds can you see in the UK in December?

Peak numbers of wintering ducks, geese and swans, Starling murmurations, harriers and owls at dusk roosts, divers and sea ducks on the coast, and the busiest garden feeders of the year, with Siskins, Bramblings and wintering Blackcaps.

Is December a good month for birdwatching in the UK?

Yes, for numbers and spectacle. Wildfowl are at their peak and roosts are at their best. The days are short, so plan around the light and finish at a roost.

Where can I see a Starling murmuration in December?

RSPB Ham Wall on the Somerset Levels, Brighton Palace Pier and Aberystwyth pier are reliable. Arrive about 45 minutes before sunset.

Should I feed garden birds in December?

Yes. RSPB advice is to feed seed and peanuts from 1 November to 30 April. Clean feeders weekly and keep a dish of fresh water out.
