How Birdle works
If you've played Wordle you already know the rules. You have six attempts to guess a five-letter word. After each guess, each letter is shaded:
- 🟩 Green — letter is in the answer and in the right position
- 🟨 Yellow — letter is in the answer but in the wrong position
- ⬜ Grey — letter is not in the answer
Easy mode vs Hard mode
Birdle has two modes you can toggle before you start a round:
- Easy mode — any valid 5-letter English word is accepted as a guess (like regular Wordle). Earns fewer bonus points but lets you use words like AISLE or CRATE as opening probes.
- Hard mode — only bird-themed words are accepted (species names, plumage terms, birding verbs, habitat words). Tougher to get an opening guess in, much higher points reward. The mode that gives the game its name.
Scoring
- Solved in 1 guess: 12 bonus points (Hard) / 8 (Easy)
- Solved in 2: 10 / 7
- Solved in 3: 8 / 6
- Solved in 4: 6 / 5
- Solved in 5: 4 / 3
- Solved in 6: 2 / 1
Bonus points carry into your overall Birdedex leaderboard score. Win 10 Birdle rounds in Hard mode to unlock the Birdle fanatic badge.
What kind of words are in the pool?
The Hard-mode pool is hand-picked from birding vocabulary — around 300 five-letter words including species (ROBIN, EAGLE, RAVEN, EIDER, FINCH, GREBE, PIPIT…), plumage and anatomy (BEAKS, WINGS, CLAWS, TALON, CREST), birding verbs (PERCH, FORAGE, ROOST), and habitats (REEDY, MARSH, HEATH). It's enough variety for about ten months of unique daily puzzles before any answer repeats.

Is Birdle free?
Yes — fully free, no signup. Sign in with Google in two clicks if you want to save streaks and earn badges, but it's optional.
How is Birdle different from Wordle?
Same six-guess mechanic, but the answer pool is bird-themed instead of any English word. There's also a Hard mode that restricts your guesses to bird-themed words.
Does Birdle work on mobile?
Yes — fully responsive, plus the whole site installs as a PWA. Add it to your home screen for one-tap access to today's puzzle.
When does the daily word reset?
Midnight UK time. Same word for everyone on the same day, so you can compare results with friends.
What if I miss a day?
You can't play yesterday's puzzle — only today's. That's deliberate; it's what makes daily games sticky.
