RSPB Minsmere
BBC Springwatch's home reserve. Avocets nest on the Scrape, bitterns boom in the reeds, marsh harriers quarter the marsh, and stone-curlews call from the heath. One reserve, every classic Suffolk birding scene.
Region
East of England
Habitat
Reedbed, coastal scrape, heathland, woodland
Best months
April – June, September – October
Famous for
Avocet, Bittern, Marsh Harrier, Stone-curlew
What you'll see
The Scrape (a brackish lagoon between reedbed + sea) is Minsmere's signature: Avocets nest there in spring, common terns + Sandwich terns fish, and waders use it on passage. The reedbeds host bittern (boom in spring) + marsh harrier year-round; bearded tit ping along reed edges. The heath holds nightjar (after dusk) and stone-curlew.
Autumn migration is reliable for east-coast drift migrants — yellow-browed warbler annual, occasional rarities. October sea-watch from the cliff-top trail can produce skuas + shearwaters.
How to visit
RSPB members free, £8 non-members. Excellent visitor centre, café, 7 hides, well-maintained trails. Bittern Hide + Island Mere are best for raptor / reedbed action.
