Atlantic vagrants — west coast

After Atlantic depressions or hurricane remnants, North American birds get blown across to the Western Approaches. The Isles of Scilly, west Cornwall (Hayle Estuary, Drift Reservoir, Sennen Cove), and the west coasts of Ireland (Cape Clear, Loop Head) clean up. Targets:

Siberian arrivals — east coast & isles

Eastern winds across Northern Europe sweep continental and Asian vagrants westward. By mid-October the catalogue is wild:

For the cost of nothing, sit on any clear-sky east-coast or south-coast morning. By 7-9am you'll see:

Wildfowl arrival

October sees the goose and swan arrival ramp up. Pink-footed Geese hit Norfolk in tens of thousands. Whooper Swans reach Slimbridge and Caerlaverock. Bewick's Swans arrive late October.
