The single best food: sunflower hearts
If you only buy one bird food, buy sunflower hearts. They're husked sunflower kernels — no shells to scatter, no waste, 100% edible. Every garden bird from Goldfinches and Greenfinches to Robins, Dunnocks, Blue Tits and Great Tits eats them eagerly. They pull in more species more reliably than any other single food.
Bucktons Sunflower Hearts (12.75kg)Our pick
£32Bulk bag — lasts a typical garden 2-3 months. Hands-down the highest-conversion UK garden feed.
Magnet food #2: niger seed for goldfinches
Niger seed is a tiny black oil seed that goldfinches and siskins go mad for. The catch: it falls through standard feeder ports — you need a fine-mesh feeder. Once you have one, expect Goldfinches within a week and Siskins in winter.
Bucktons Niger Seed (12.55kg)
£28Bulk niger — combined with the mesh feeder below, brings goldfinch flocks to almost any garden in the UK.
Niger Seed Mesh FeederOur pick
£12Tiny ports for niger — standard tube feeders just spill the stuff.

Cold weather burns calories — birds lose ~10% of body weight overnight in freezing conditions. Suet fat balls give them back what they spent. Tits, Starlings, Long-tailed Tits, Robins, Great Spotted Woodpeckers all hit them through autumn and winter.
Suet Fat Balls (50-pack, no-net)
£1450 balls in a tub — no plastic mesh (which traps small birds' feet). Buy the no-net version.
The right feeders
Three-feeder setup covers 95% of UK garden birds:
- One tube feeder for sunflower hearts (any decent squirrel-proof tube)
- One mesh niger feeder for niger (specialised — standard ports too big)
- One fat-ball cage or large mesh feeder for suet balls
Squirrel-Proof Seed FeederOur pick
£24Cage-around-tube design. Birds get in; squirrels watch sadly.
Don't skip water
A bird bath brings in species that ignore feeders entirely — Song Thrush, Mistle Thrush, sparrows, even seasonal warblers. Cleaner than feeders too: rinse and refill weekly.
Pedestal Bird Bath
£35Classic concrete-look pedestal — heavy enough that magpies can't tip it.
Nest boxes (book in for spring)
Mount a 32mm-hole nest box 2-3m up a wall or tree, facing north-east (avoids midday sun + prevailing rain). Blue Tits and Great Tits use them readily. Best put up Sept–Jan before territory-staking starts.
FSC Wooden Nest Box (32mm hole)
£18Standard 32mm entry suits Blue Tit and Great Tit. FSC-certified UK wood.
Placement matters
Three rules:
- 3-5m from cover. Birds need a quick escape route. Too close to a wall = sparrowhawk ambush point. Too far from any bush = won't visit.
- Off the ground. Cats. Cats. Cats.
- Visible from your window. Whole point.
